Castor and the surrounding area, which included the Roman town of Durobrivae, is one of the important areas of Roman Britain. A small fort once guarded the bridge over the river Nene, growing into a settlement and later a considerable town with industrial areas nearby.

Here in Castor there are also important Roman remains, including a major Roman building on the hill behind the church, known as the Praetorium.

Our understanding of this history owes much to Edmund Artis (1789–1847), Steward for Earl Fitzwilliam at Milton Hall, who conducted systematic excavations of Roman sites in the area during the 1820s and recorded his findings in his book 'The Durobrivae of Antoninus'.
